There was a full emergency response to reports of a person reported to be in the water off Millport, but it transpired to be a hoax.

At 10.10am on Tuesday, the 'emergency call' was made as Largs lifeboat and her volunteer crew launched immediately to attend the casualty.

The Coastguard helicopter Sikorsky was also on scene along with coastguard shore personnel.

However, after an extensive search no person could be found.

RNLI Press Officer Alasdair Woods said: "At the time the call was initiated an observer on shore reported seeing a person running from a phone box and jumping on a bus, after some coastguard detective work, the call was thought to have come from the same phone box and by then considered to be a hoax.

"Having established this call was indeed a hoax the lifeboat returned to station to be made ready for her next service."
