The world of virtual reality is coming to one of the most relaxing and beautiful scenic areas in Largs, but don't worry, it will actually provide a range of information for tourists, and is at the cutting edge of technology.

A new augmented reality sign allows mobile phone users to download an application which allows them to view moving images and information about tourism hotspots.

Magnus the Viking will even make an appearance, while a swooping eagle will also provide some eye-catching graphics.

A council spokesman said: "The augmented reality sign is just being tested at the moment, it won't be up and running for another two or three weeks, but there is a QR Code half-way up and this barcode leads your mobile phone to the app.

"Once it is fully active, it will look very impressive., and you can look over the bay and see a number of signs popping up pointing out the Isle of Cumbrae, and other areas. It should be fully operational soon."

The new sign was ratified by the North Coast Area Committee, costing £7500, but it was argued that it could save the council money as the new virtual technology coupled with the wide use of mobile phones would save the printing of leaflets and brochures.

With a variety of options being presented to the councillors, it was decided to utilise an information sign at the Haylie Brae picnic area, since it is one of the major gateways into Largs and the surrounding area. The cost was split between the physical sign itself and the use of innovative augmented reality technology.

Bruce Macaulay, of 6274 Public Art, noted that it would also be possible for the augmented reality software to include video footage of Largs from the past, from the National Film Archive.

Speaking to the Largs and Millport News, Mr Macaculay stated: “Once people have downloaded the app, it can find the experiences we created based on your location – we would do Vikings and a hawk coming out of the sign. It will be quite spectacular to see.”

He continued: The whole power is that we can change this at any time. I don’t think anywhere else in the area has this augmented reality signage so it will be a first for Largs.”
