Christmas Service

P7 at Cumbrae Primary held an end of term Christmas service in the school gym before the Christmas break, and were joined by parents, grandparents and friends and all other pupils. Due to the awful weather, and the ferries were off, it was changed from the cathedral to the school. The pupils did a lovely job at the service, especially too as they were missing most of their teachers but were helped by all the other staff, and Mrs Newton of Largs Academy.

The service was led by Jay Currie and Shannon Docherty. Both pupils delivered their lines clearly and did a great job. There were hymns and a prayer from Holly Hamilton, the recorder group played three tunes, and Zac Stevenson and Danni McEnhill read a passage from the bible about Jesus's birth. Lucy Letham then read a poem she had written about Christmas.

Shannon stated that at Cumbrae Primary they are very proud of their choir who went on to sing three songs. Jay then invited Canon Boyd to speak and he gave an address.

Mungo Boyle did a piano duet with Mrs Joyce and they were accompanied by the recorder group which was particularly moving.

Shannon thanked everyone for coming and Jay invited everyone to join in singing their last song 'We wish you a Merry Christmas'. The collection was for Canine Concern, a charity which the school supports through the 'Reading with Dogs scheme'. It was a truly lovely service and pointedly the last service before the P7 before they all graduate to the 'big school'.

New Year events

There were a number of special events on the island over the 'Bells'. There was a party in the Tavern Bar's lounge, a family party night in the Millport golf club, and a party in the Newton Bar, featuring The Journeymen. All the events were well attended.

Local correspondent Mary Currie hopes that everyone had a great time and spent it in Glasgow with her daughter Lauren, and invites everyone to supply her with articles in 2017. Phone her on 530544 or email editorial@largsnews.co.uk - thank you everyone for their contributions in 2016.
