A RANGE of strong views were expressed concerning the new seafront promenade proposals at this week’s consultation in Largs.
The price tag of the development is £590,000, and will be designed by TGP Landscape Architects.
The emerging plans – which were drawn from the Largs Masterplan were put forward at St Columba’s Parish Church over Tuesday and Wednesday this week.
However, there was some strong criticism put forward including Largs renowned artist James Watt who stated in a posting on the contributions wall: “This project serves no other purpose than to make a mess of our prom.”
The designs have been given a mixed response; some of who have welcomed adult exercise equipment near the prom, although the shelter design at Aubery has been likened to ‘Sydney Opera House’.
The development incorporates a concrete ribbon design along the prom to Aubery which contains a natural stone which is robust for a seaside environment,
One of the concerns which was raised was reducing the conflict between cyclists and pedestrians on the seafront. No delineated cycle path area has been included in the proposals.
Largs community councillor Drew Cochrane spoke out about banning cyclists on the prom, but resident Scott Paton, who lives near Aubery, stated that the prom was a safe area for cyclists including young families away from the busy traffic of the A78.
Resident Margaret Brown contacted the ‘News’ to say she was firmly against the prom improvement plans: “People were so angry - it is a waste of money and we don’t need a while ribbon line to show us how to walk to Aubery. It is a shambles of a project.”
However, Councillor Alex Gallagher, Cabinet Member for Economy, said: “The Largs Masterplan was developed to reinforce the connection between the waterfront, the promenade and the town. I believe that an upgraded and improved promenade is vital to the town.”
Ian Murdoch, who posted the pictures on social media, said: “I have had a lot of complaints that there was no evening session, as out of town workers couldn’t attend, so they are restricting a lot of people from going to contribute. I think we should enhance, encourage and preserve the history we have got. Some of the proposals are to O.T.T and futuristic. What is wrong with benches with backs on them?
"They are not practical and in keeping with Largs Prom.”
