Classic car

The Millport Classic Car event was held on Saturday May 13 in the Garrison.

After lovely weather the previous day, dark clouds gathered and the day began very wet. However, this did not dampen the spirits of the organisers, the participants and the spectators. Not as many classic cars took part as it anticipated, obviously due to the weather, but it was still 60-70 fabulous vehicles in the show. There were classic minis, M.Gs, Triumphs, Vauxhalls, as well as a Ferrari, Rolls Royce of many more. Two classic fire engines also made the journey across.

The spectators were able to vote for the 'best in show'. The most votes, overwhelmingly,, went to The Jensen 54IR car, owned by Tom McWhirter, all the way from Elgin! 2nd was a Morris Minor Traveller owned by Ron Stewart, and 3rd was a 1937 Austin 14 Goodwood, owned by Peter Wylie.

The winner received a rosette, a bottle of champagne, and the first prize of a dinner, and bed and breakfast at the Royal George Hotel, donated by owner Margaret Kennedy. The prizewinner Tom McWhirter was presented with the award by the new Cumbrae Queen for 2017, Susan Johnstone, in her first official engagement.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the event despite the inclement weather, and organisers Jimmy and Eleanor Newton would like to thank all the car owners who took part and The Windfarm Project for a grant, Stuart and Matthew Cape of Escape Promotions, The Leckie Family, Millport Festival Committee, The Royal George Hotel, Garrison House Cafe, and Emma Newton. Also a big thank you to everyone who turned out at the event despite the weather. A disco was held that evening in the Royal George Hotel.

The Millport 10 Miler

A great atmosphere prevailed on Sunday May 14 for the Fun Run or Walk 'entitled the Millport 10 Miler'. In perfect weather, 119 people took part to run or walk around the island - a total of 10.5 miles. The new owners of the Garrison Cafe, Lynn and Kenny Bogan, provided power shots for every participant. The winner of the race was Conor Watson. Every entrant received a medal at the finish, and lots of encouragement and support as they reached the finishing line. There was also lots of lovely refreshments including bananas for all, donated by the Premier Stores. The marvellous sum of approximately £2000 was raised for the Parkinson's payments and their causes. The organisers, sisters, Marina Dobbin and Angela Giorgetti, both businesswomen on the island, would like to thank everyone who helped, especially the helpers at the water stops, the Premier Stores, the Garrison Cafe, and everyone who participated in the great fun event.

Merchant Navy

On Saturday May 27, the Royal British Legion Scotland are hosting their Merchant Navy Parade. Transport leaves RBLS at 12.45pm, service at memorial at 1.15pm and parade starting from Cardiff Street at 1.45pm

Finding Your Feet

The FYF Millport Fun'raiser is back and it's bigger and better than ever before, thanks to sponsorship from Children's Aid Scotland.

There's a twist to the family cycle round the island, with the addition of a treasure hunt, then an even larger selection of kids' activities and entertainment than in previous years.

The inflatable village will be back, including Gladiators, Water Walkers, Laser Quest and an Assault Course as well as magic shows, a party by kids' favourite entertainer Kidnetick, balloon twisting workshops, face painting, and dozens of sideshows and games.

It all takes place on Sunday June 11 with the cycle and treasure hunt starting at 11am, and the fun day at the Garrison from 12 noon till 3pm.

The charity supports families affected by amputation or limb difference, through a range of sporting initiatives and social inclusion projects.
