Largs Community Council are to write to North Ayrshire Council after slamming the state of the new prom.
There was a social media outcry when the new prom was laid in December, while councillors Tom Marshall and Ian Murdoch have both put in strong objections about the surface.
Community councillor Jim Perman described the prom as a ‘bloody disgrace’ and went as far as to say it should be ‘ripped up and they should start again’.
Independent councillor Ian Murdoch said: “I raised concerns about the new prom 5 minutes into the job when I phoned the roads department and asked them to come to Largs immediately and discuss it with me. The roads person agreed with me that the spread rate of the chips was far too dense, and you can see it starts to thin out .
“”I had arranged a meeting with all the councillors and the roads department, and it was discussed in the first week, but it was their judgement to finish the job and see what happens.”
Community councillor Patricia Perman said: “The chips are coming up as it is just in clumps - it is breaking up already. It is a mess. It has only been down a month or so. Two friends have contacted me to say that the prom at Saltcoats is fabulous. I don’t know what they’ve got. Councillor Alex Gallagher said on Facebook that he was walking along ‘our lovely new prom’ when it opened. I felt like saying - well walk along it now and you will see the difference. There are big chunks coming out - it is not an acceptable job.”
Ian Murdoch added: “We had a public realm consultation in St Columba’s Parish Church last year, and everyone unanimously rejected the futuristic street furniture in favour of a good quality prom surface - and we did not get one.”
The community council agreed to write an objection letter regarding the prom.
Labour councillor Alex Gallagher responded: “Of course, we would have liked to have spent £4m on getting a marble surface prom, but we have had cut after cut from the Scottish Government, and Tory Government at Westminster. I would say it is a perfectly reasonable surface given the price. It is being investigated by the council, and we will see what the results of these investigations are.”
