GOOD Morning Britain producers are set to invite a blind Largs veteran to tell the remarkable story of how is hoping to regain his sight to a national audience.

Executives from the top rated breakfast show have expressed an interest in showcasing our campaign to give John Hutchinson his eyesight back.

As we went to press, producers of the ITV programme, which is presented by Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid, were in discussions about highlighting John's plight on one of their broadcasts next week.

The 90-year-old was recently given a trial of state of the art glasses created by Oxford university boffins, which enabled him to see for the first time in over a decade.

They had to be returned after a trial period and are now being sold by a commercial company at a whopping £2,500.

The News has joined forces with teh Royal British Legion Largs branch to get John the special specs so he can see his wife again and the beautiful sunsets of Largs coastline.

A spokeswoman for Good Morning Britain said: "The producers are really interested in John's story. We would like speak to him about the possibility of appearing on the show."

The telly show told the News that they were tentatively planning to do the broadcast 'some time next week'.

Reporter Calum Corral, who broke the exclusive story, said: "We have been campaigning to raise attention to John's plight to get these special spectacles to enable him to see again.

"Being a seaside community, it has been great to see everyone rallying round, with Largs Thistle set to have a charity match and The Fish Works also carrying out a fundraiser.

"It is fantastic to know that Good Morning Britain have shown an interest."

John, of Glen Avenue, was in the Army for 18 years in airborne divisions, but lost his sight after tropical parasites got into his bloodstream and attacked the retina in his eyes.

He was in Africa at the time helping to set up a disability centre for refugees for the UN, and was rated 97 per cent blind.

He has been without vision for 10 years but two years ago he found out about Smart Specs - new glasses which improve the vision of partially-sighted people.

John, who is Vice President at the Royal British Legion Largs branch, was the only Scot selected to trial the new specs.

Stuart Rumble vice chair of the Royal British Legion Largs branch, said: "We are delighted to be able to help John. What would the point be in having the Royal British Legion if we couldn't help in a situation like this?"
