A SUPERMARKET in Largs was evacuated after reports of a potential gas leak sparked a 999 response.

Four fire engines attended the Morrisons store in Irvine Road at around 12.50pm on Tuesday, January 2.

People were evacuated from the supermarket and some reportedly remained outside the store for over an hour.

It is understood that drivers were also turned away from entering the car park while firefighters were at the scene.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) confirmed that there was no sign of gas and no casualties.

A spokesperson for the SFRS said: "We were alerted at 12.48pm on Tuesday, January 2 to reports of a potential gas leak at a commercial premises in Largs.

"Operations Control mobilised four appliances to the town's Irvine Road, where firefighters examined the area and established no sign of gas.

"Crews left the scene after ensuring the area was safe. There were no casualties."
