MEMBERS of Largs Tennis Club have served up a fantastic donation to a local charity.

A cheque for £250 was handed over to director David Ennis of the Gillian's Saltire Appeal charity at their prizegiving at Nardini's resaurant in Largs.

There has been a close connection between the charity and the tennis club over recent years.

Charity director Les Ward supplied the winning trophy for the tennis club who hold a Saltire tournament at the club every year.

The charity provides high quality respite accommodation for cancer sufferers, their families and carers in Ayrshire and other parts of Scotland, and owns a flat in the Moorings complex in the town specifically for this purpose.

Gillian's Saltire Appeal was set up following the death of Les's wife Gillian from cancer in December 2005.

Les decided he wanted to honour Gillian's memory and at the same time make a real difference to the lives of others who suffer from the same illness.

Les and a group of his friends had a meeting and decided to organise a campaign to raise money to provide practical and meaningful help for people who suffer from cancer.

The charity has been running successfully in the town for the past 16 years, and includes Ryder Cup winning player and captain Sam Torrance as its patron.
