Thought for the Week

by Richard Walker – retired Anglican clergyman

God loves us and he loves the world. Will he save it if we destroy it? History shows that he gives us freedom to love or hate, to build or destroy. If humankind acts to destroy his earth then God will not stop us.

Today we are driving our vehicles, ships and aircraft, and burning fossil fuels at ever-increasing rates to make electricity. Our agriculture gives off increasing quantities of carbon dioxide and methane. The ice in glaciers and at the poles is melting, sea-levels are rising. Very hot weather and very cold weather are becoming more frequent and storms are becoming more ferocious. Some famines are caused by war but some are the result of climate destabilisation. It is a rapidly growing problem for poorer people all over the world and is also impacting coastal communities everywhere. The earth as we know it is under threat. The only solution is that we must stop global warming.

Ordinary people like you and me must stop pumping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. We must greatly reduce or stop driving petrol and diesel cars. We must use public transport and encourage the governments of the world to improve it. We must obtain our electricity and gas from sustainable sources such as that provided by Good Energy, Bulb or Ecotricity.

God wants us to look after his world for the benefit of its creatures. Will we do that and will we do it in time?
