Disappointed shoppers took to the Largs ‘News’ Facebook site over the news that Hasties department store is up for sale for £549,995.

However, one reader suggested a possible solution for the famous local shop which is known for tis extensive ranges of goods from traditional Scottish fare like kilts to food, whisky and angling gear to name but a few.

Stephen Graham, 38, formerly of Largs, suggested that the local Euromillions winners could help save the much loved store, and said: “One for the Weirs to think about.” Dawn Marie Allan said: “Oh no! For the past 25 years my folks who married in Largs 50 years ago have recently retired to Cumbrae, and for the years they lived away used to visit Hasties on every holiday to buy gifts for family and friends which have gone all around the world.

“Here’s hoping the right people buy it because it is truly a unique & special store and will be missed if it changes completely!” Elayne Jeffrey said: “It is so sad to hear. Hasties is not only an institution but pretty much able to meet all your needs.” Sally Duncan, a member of the family who run Hasties, said: “Don’t worry folks. We hope to sell it as a going concern. We would like to retire but want to see the shop continue.” Evie Perchard was heartened by this, and said: “That’s really good news from Sally Duncan telling us all that it’s being sold as a going concern. Long may it continue. I need to get more pressies there next year!” Evelyn Walker added: “It is a great part of Largs and sincerely hope whoever buys it keeps it as close to the original as possible.” In agreement, Fiona Cowan said: “Fingers crossed it’ll carry on forever in the same way under new ownership. I too can’t imagine a visit home without a wander round the ‘Largsest’ Store.” Piero Robertson summed things up: “I always visit this shop - it’s just the bees knees.” Bill Baxter is a frequent customer, and said: “I bought my wife a necklace and earrings made from compressed heather there on my last visit to Largs great wee biggest shop. I agree with all the previous comments.” The business has been under the care of the Duncan family for three generations and opened in 1969. The property agents are Bruce and Co.
