A special and unique Remembrance is going to happen on the channel between Cumbrae and Largs on November 11 to mark this year’s centenary of the outbreak of the Great War.

The newly re-formed Royal British Legion section of Largs have joined forces with their colleagues on Millport for a wreath casting from the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry.

At 10.30am, the Largs party will meet at the ferry terminal to head over to the Isle of Cumbrae on the 10.45am ferry. The two branches will subsequently meet at the Cumbrae Slip.

At 11am, the ferry will depart the Cumbrae Slip, and during the crossing, the ferry will briefly stop midstream, and both respective chairman of the two branches, Colin McGinty of Largs, and Peter Morrison of Millport, will cast their wreaths.

Mr Phil Chinery, secretary of the Largs branch of the British Legion, said: “We attended the Millport Merchant Navy remembrance service earlier this year, where the wreath casting was mentioned and met with approval. When I originally spoke to CalMac, they were not only very supportive of the idea, but keen to get involved.” The official re-dedication of the Royal British Legion Largs branch colours was held within St Columba’s Parish Church in Largs in September.

Royal British Legion’s Ayrshire President Alistair Kennedy, Vice Chairman James Wilson and treasurer Ruth Kingswood attended the rededication of the Largs branch at St Columba’s Parish Church.

Branches from Millport, Paisley, Kilwinning, and the Isle of Bute came along, as well as the Three Towns branch encompassing Ardrossan, Saltcoats and Stevenston.

Mr Chinnery carried the colour, and chairman Colin McGinty escorted the colour.

Since forming earlier this year, the Royal British Legion in Largs have carried out a number of community events, including placing poppy crosses on local First World War graves to mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of war.

The Millport Royal British Legion is long established, with premises located in Reid Street, where the branch club provides regular events, themed nights, and fundraisers.

A new legion monument on the far side of the Isle of Cumbrae with the poignant words ‘For your tomorrow, we gave our today’ was opened two years ago, to complement their activities on the island, and has been a popular visiting spot.
