Memories were freeflowing of the old Largs swimming pool and cafe when a classic photo jogged people’s memories on Facebook.

The picture of the original design, by architects James Houston and Sons of Kilbirnie, built in 1971, received over 220 likes when it appeared on social media.

A proud Sheila Gillan revealed: “My dad helped to build this!” And Gillian Jack reminisced: “Microwaved cheese roll in the cafe - those were the days!” However, Shaun McLardy recalled that it cost 2p to get in, and the cheese rolls were actually grilled - adding: “I think is is because there weren’t any microwaves in those days!” But Gillian Jack said: “It was an early type microwave or some kind of grill. The rolls had steam coming out of them and were soft - not grilled.” And Alison Jack added to the the debate: “It was definitely in the microwave Gillian! I remember because we didn’t have a microwave at home and these were delicious!” Yvonne Harper said: “I remember the toasted cheese rolls and quavers. I think it was a large toastie maker grill.” Gill Gange added: “My grandad Jack McGarva used to manage the centre - I have many happy memories of swimming here.” Brooke Townsley described it as ‘An architectural gem’.

And Aileen Grant said that the pool was her second home in the late 70’s and early 80’s with Largs & District Swimming Club. She said: “There were lots of early morning starts in the pool before school. Freshly baked apple turnovers after training in the summer holidays was the order of the day!” * The glorious sunset on Sunday afternoon was a major event on Facebook. Calum Corral’s picture was re-tweeted by Channel Four weatherman Liam Dutton, and received re-tweets from all over the UK, including even the Welsh Ambulance service! Finlay Oman’s stunning sunset picture from the Haylie Brae received hundreds of likes, and others on the Largs News Facebook site showcased the vibrant colours, including spectacular pictures by Ian Rutherford, Susan Stratton, and Andrew Boyle.
