An elderly couple who have become an internet sensation after being filmed together on their scooters on Largs prom say they are astonished at its success.

Speaking at the Yuletide night celebrations last Thursday evening, Maggie and Karl Haston said it was completely unexpected, and weren’t even aware that they had been filmed!

Maggie, who is originally born in Largs, said: “It is on the computer and now it has up to four million hits. It is lunacy, it really is!” Karl admitted that he hadn’t yet seen the video online, but joked: “If I had a pound for every hit, I’d be rich!” Maggie added: “I was blaming my big son as he is very involved in computers, and it is his big thing, but he promised me that it wasn’t him who filmed us!” Maggie used to run nursery schools before later becoming a civil servant, and Carl was an engineer to trade, and both had moved away from Largs, before returning once more in retirement.

The surprise success of the internet video on the LadsBible website has caught them by surprise, but the couple admitted that they haven’t been treated any differently in the town since their new found fame.

Maggie added: “I was born in Largs - I was here all my days, married Karl, went to London, and next we went all over the place, and this is us back home at my mum and dad’s house in Alexander Avenue.

“I couldn’t find the video on my own computer when I went looking for it, but my daughter showed me!” And Karl remarked that the last time he appeared in the ‘News’ was for very different reasons, as he was a young actor before he went on to become an apprentice in an aircraft company.

The Hastons said they always enjoy coming to the yuletide night, and were intrigued to see how many people had turned out for the festivities this year.

Later, they both watched the Largs Rock Choir perform near the Pierhead, before the fireworks display on Largs Prom.

And the internet success has led to a few requests. Maggie said: “Largs on the whole is very good, and we haven’t been bothered. The kids all want a shot of the scooter - The wee boys say I will give you a pound missus if I can get a shot around the car park, but they’re not on!” “We are not internet celebrities - in fact, we are not internet anything - it takes up all my time just to switch on the computer and access the emails!” The video was posted to the popular website The Lad Bible and had been seen by almost four mllion people in just over two days. It featured the Hastons crossing Greenock Road at the RNLI station, backed by a track from American rapper Chamillionaire.

The Lad Bible is one of the world’s most popular sites for men in their 20s and early 30s, and has more than 6.6m likes.
