A Largs teenager is set to hit the heights by climbing Africa's highest mountain.

Amy Murray, 17, is embarking on a trip of a lifetime this summer to Tanzania with an organisation called World Challenge, where she will be doing charity work.

Upon arrival in Tanzania on 21st June she will be setting off on a trek in the Monduli Juu district, near the Serengeti National Park.

This will be an acclimatisation trek to prepare Amy and her group for the main hike up Mount Kilimanjaro.

Soon after, they will travel to Mount Kilimanjaro and take part in the Kilimanjaro Tree Planting Project. This project was set up to try and reforest the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro in order to reverse the devastating effects of deforestation for the local environment.

Amy said: “We will then be embarking on the awe-inspriring eight day climb of Mount Kilimanjaro - the highest mountain in Africa. This will be a challenging hike, ‘Kili’ is so big that you can pass through all four seasons when climbing it. We then move on to the most rewarding part of our trip, the Project phase.

“This is when we get to go into villages and interact with the local community. The Tanzanian government have a scheme where for each classroom built they will provide a teacher for the children so we will be helping build schools along with spending time with the children ourselves.” And to hel fundraise for her big trip, Amy is proving she has a head for heights by abseiling down the Titan Crane.

She explained: “As you can imagine this trip, although very rewarding, is very expensive - not including my kit, vaccinations or visas it costs £5000. Along with doing team fundraising over the past year I am doing something that I hope will gain interest and sponsorship - an abseil down the Titan Crane on Saturday 28th March.
