Calls have been made by a former carer for more railings to be erected along Largs Prom following the recent tragic accident on the shore.

Patricia Rostek, 95, died after falling from her wheelchair on to the beach, near May Street, on the afternoon of 2 April.

And since the incident, there have been a variety of different views expressed on the Largs and Millport News Facebook site about whether to install railings or not.

Karen Watson said: “I have to say as a former carer who worked along that way, I used to be very wary whilst taking the residents along in their wheelchairs as the prom almost pulls you to the edge. It is very hard to control it. Whilst I agree it’s nice to see a view without railings, I do feel that small railings would be beneficial. “I used to work along there in Warren Park and was always a bit scared walking with the wheelchairs on the prom. I am very sad for the lady, and whoever was with her as they must have got a terrible fright. It is such a tragedy.” Julie Woolley said: “I’m sorry for the family of the lady but it’s a refreshing change to walk on a seafront that’s not hidden behind a concrete wall or other barrier.” Louise Milligan commented: “It always surprised me that there was no barrier between the ice cream parlour and the old yacht club. It’s pretty high at some points and when the lighting fails (sadly a regular occurrence) it can be very scary.

It is awful for the family and the carer, and hopefully no rash decisions will be made though.” Ian Barr said: “I’m sorry to hear of this tragedy but leave the seafront alone.” Allan Scott said: “This was a horrible freak accident, but it was just that - a freak. You can’t prevent every accident. Should we have railings next to every kerb on public roads, just in case?” And Graham Green said: “This incident has been distressing for everyone but, as Allan says, it was a freak accident. Perhaps a training course for wheelchair handlers would be advisable as I have found myself having to use a bit of strength on normal pavements to stop the wheelchair I have been pushing from ending up in the gutter. By the way, tyre pressure can have a considerable influence.” However, Karen’s call for barriers to be installed received backing from others.

Daniel Gaddini said: “It is so sad - I think it is now time for barriers along the whole prom before we have another tragedy.” James Craddock agreed: “A barrier from the kiosk to the bottom of May Street should have been installed long ago, especially near the kiosk.”
