Councillor Tom Marshall has asked that North Ayrshire Council remove political posters from council owned property in the town.

In a request to North Ayrshire Council chief executive Elma Murray on Friday, Cllr. Marshall said that there was 'defacement by posters of a street map at the south end of the seafront car park in Largs.’ The posters advertise “Bairns not Bombs” and “Yes”.

His request to the council stated: “I would be obliged if you could instruct the immediate removal of the defacement.” Last year, North Ayrshire Council’s opposition parties united to defeat an SNP motion that would have allowed the display of election materials on council property.

Conservative Councillor Marshall successfully moved an amendment that 'North Ayrshire Council’s policy is to disallow display of campaign posters on any council property. The posters were subsequently removed.

He said: “I think it is atrocious this campaign is going round the town with various stickers/posters - it is totally irresponsible. They shouldn’t be defacing the town maps with these posters but I must say the Chief Executive responded very quickly and it was very good that these stickers were removed promptly. It is council policy, and there will be a charge on the perpetrators for any costs involved in their removal.” The posters were taken down at 9.15 on Monday morning.
