The owner of a taxi company has called for more common sense to be applied when roadworks take place, after extensive disruption on the Largs roads.

It took 20 minutes to drive between the pier and Morrison’s supermarket when the gridlock was at its peak on Tuesday afternoon.

With new BT broadband cables being laid, roadworks in Largs town centre will continue for the rest of the week. Chris Boyd, who owns Brisbane Taxis, claims local businesses were again not made aware of the impending works on the street, and there were tailbacks along Irvine Road, Gateside Street and Aitken Street.

Four-way traffic lights were not erected until 10.55am on Tuesday morning.

Due to traffic lights in the town centre, Chris, who owns Brisbane Taxis, said: “ “There are no ‘arteries’ for people to get through, and nowhere we can turn off to avoid the junctions leading on to the Main Road.

“Where the traffic management plan fails, is that they are closing off Waterside Street, and the only turn off you can use is at Gallowgate Street, and it is now blocked.

“The only option you have is Nelson Street, but you are cutting off the whole town centre, and everywhere else is stuck.

“The traffic management plan is failing the town - once this happens at the main junction there will be nowhere else for anyone to go. It is a good reason to re-open Waterside Street to two way traffic.” A spokesperson for BT said: “We are currently working on the installation of high-speed fibre broadband infrastructure locally so that more people and businesses in Largs can benefit from the fast, new technology. The work has been lodged with the relevant roads authority and we have permissions to install cables in Main Street from Tuesday until Thursday, and in Irvine Road between Thursday and Monday. We’re sorry for any disruption while works take place but, ultimately, it means that larger areas of Largs will have access to the latest communications technology.”
