A Largs woman has told of the breathtaking moment she saw a humpback whale in Loch Fyne.

Jane Griffin, an Ocean Youth Trust fundraiser, was on a five day voyage with the charity when the whale was spotted near East Loch Tarbert.

The massive mammal put on an amazing display for everyone aboard the Alba Venturer — who were enthralled by the sighting.

This was Jane’s first time on the vessel and she told the News that she was astonished to see the ocean giant.

She said: “We headed out of the channel into Loch Fyne, and one of the kids said he could see a wave or a splash in the middle of the channel and it looked unusual.

“I got my binoculars out and we got the sails up and motored up a bit. This whale just jumped right out of the water off the starboard side - it was massive.

“We thought it was a killer whale at first, or perhaps a minke. We checked our guide which had a list of species, including whales and dolphins. But didn’t feature a humpback whale as it is so rare!

“The fins looked so much larger than those on a minke whale - they were huge! It was rolling about on its back with fins waving in the air, and jumping up and down, before diving, and its tail was flicking up."
