Articulated lorries and other large vehicles are reaching speeds of more than 42mph just yards from a nursery and two parks, it has been revealed.

Transport Scotland’s road safety manager, George Henry, told Largs Community Council that the findings of a survey at the 30mph limit Douglas Park/Anderson Park section of the main road were of a real concern.

The survey found that the average speed along that section of road was 31mph for cars, 32mph for vans and similar vehicles, and 34mph for HGVs, coaches etc. One of the key findings identified the speed which 15% of drivers exceeded.

At this location, just under one in every six car drivers drove through this section at more than 39mph, 15% of vans were doing more than 40mph while, most concerningly for the community council, was the news that 15% of the largest vehicles were driving faster than 42mph. The survey was primarily focused on the planned 20mph limit pilot in Largs town centre - a scheme that has been branded a waste of money after it was found that the average speed was just 16mph.
