An artist’s Year in Cumbrae

The new ‘Studio Gallery’ in Millport is hosting its first solo exhibition during the Easter holidays.
‘A Year in Cumbrae’ is a personal visual response to the Cumbrae landscape by local artist Harry Sutton.
Harry has worked and exhibited in and around Ayrshire for nearly forty years. A graduate from Glasgow School of Art, Harry was an art teacher in the county for 36 years. Now a part-time resident of the island, he has been working on a series of paintings and pastel drawings inspired by the Cumbrae landscape.
Harry will exhibit a range of brightly coloured landscapes and seascapes in pastel and oil. The show will also feature watercolour paintings of the ‘gates, doorways, closes, nooks and crannies’ which are an unusual and charming characteristic of the Millport townscape.
Gill Miller and Mazda Munn, who have organised this exhibition, said that they are delighted to showcase the latest works of this versatile and talented artist at the at the Millport Art Group’s new Studio Gallery space at the Cathedral.
The Millport Art Group has been offering art workshops at the studio for the past 18 months and working with the community to create public artwork including the illuminated Light Trail of art installations during the Millport Festival of Light.
The group has gone from strength to strength. Gill said, ‘We now offer pottery and stained glass workshops which complement the well-attended beginner’s art and design sessions.’
Mazda added, ‘We have been working closely with the Cathedral of the Isles and are so delighted with the support which the Warden, Andrew Wright, has given us and the enthusiasm he shows for all the Millport based art projects which originate at the studio.’
The new Gallery makes good use of the bright space afforded by the Cathedral Annex. Millport Art Group will continue to offer a wide variety of workshops in this space but plan to have some more exhibitions throughout the year.
The Harry Sutton exhibition is being held in the Millport Art Group Studio at the Cathedral of the Isles and will run from the 7th of April until the 17th April. It will be open to the public from 2pm until 5pm daily. Visitors are most welcome. For more details, email Millportartgroup@yahoo.com
