The opening night of Millport Art Group’s new Studio Gallery last Friday was a roaring success.

Over eighty visitors attended the preview of ‘An Artist’s Year in Cumbrae’, a personal visual response by Ayrshire Artist Harry Sutton. Harry exhibited 30 brightly coloured landscapes and seascapes in pastel and oil. The works feature watercolour paintings of the ‘gates, doorways, closes, nooks and crannies’ which are an unusual and charming characteristic of the Millport townscape. The 30 paintings on display show a fresh artistic view of the island and the town, and were enthusiastically received by the Gallery visitors.

The new Studio Gallery makes good use of the bright space afforded by the Cathedral Annex providing a unique exhibition space, heated by a roaring open fire which adds a quirky and unique quality to the viewing experience.

Art Group co-founder, Gill Miller said, ‘The studio has developed considerably since we conceived the idea 18 months ago. We now offer pottery and stained glass workshops which complement the well-attended regular beginner’s art and design sessions. We plan to organise some more exhibitions throughout the year.’

Mazda Munn added, ‘We have been working closely with the Cathedral of the Isles and are so delighted with the support which the Warden, Andrew Wright, has given us and the enthusiasm he shows for all the Millport based art projects and creative community work which originate at the studio.’

The Harry Sutton Exhibition in the Studio Gallery at the Cathedral of the Isles will run until the 17th April. It will be open to the public from 2pm until 5pm daily Visitors are most welcome.
