In a letter to the Largs & Millport News this week a lady has complained, on behalf of her parents, to the perilous state of the walkways.

Moira Elder stated: "I read with interest the article regarding “More Island Roadworks” where it said that North Ayrshire Council has invested £400,000 in Cumbrae roads and footpaths with a further £130,000 to be spent this year.

I sincerely hope that some of this funding will be spent on the town’s pavements which are in a dreadful state, mostly uneven and a tripping hazard for young and old alike. There is a complete lack of wheelchair access on and off the pavements which is of real concern.

"My mother (82), Margaret Steele, often uses a wheelchair which my father (84) can navigate everywhere else apart from Millport’s pavements. He is not physically strong enough to push the wheelchair on and off the pavements and has to use the road which is not particularly safe or right."

Mrs Elder recounted: "On Friday 11 July, my mother tripped on the pavement outside the Post Office where the pavement is particularly uneven and fell flat down. She broke her wrist, cut her eye, bruised her leg and broke her glasses. An ambulance was called and she ended up having to get treatment on the mainland.

"As you can imagine, this was very painful and shocking for an elderly person to endure and I would like to take this opportunity of thanking everyone who came to her aid at the time. The help she received was truly amazing from the off-duty policeman who organised everyone, to the butcher who provided wet cloths, to the island’s new GP, the paramedics and the nurses at the cottage hospital.

Let’s hope North Ayrshire Council will address the problem of Millport’s pavements"
