A permanent legacy to commemorate Millport’s key role in the Queens Baton Relay is to be developed and found a home on Cumbrae.

Local residents are being asked for their ideas to help bring the exciting plans to life.

A consultation event will take place on Saturday February 28 as Cumbrae Community Council and North Ayrshire Council looks for residents to come forward with innovative suggestions.

The Queen’s Baton has extra significance for Millport as it was constructed with elm wood from the island’s’ Garrison House grounds.

There was a floral Clyde (the mascot of the Commonwealth Games) erected in the grounds of Garrison House during the period of the Games.

This temporary structure caught the imagination of the residents and visitors and inspired the island’s community council to work in partnership with North Ayrshire Council to seek out options for a permanent and fitting reminder of the activities of 2014. Following on from the consultation event, options will be considered and funding sought to support the initiative.

Councillor Alan Hill, Cabinet Member for Community and Culture, said: “The Baton Relay really caught the imagination of our communities last summer. No more so than in Millport where the event had a special significance. “I’m delighted that we’re doing something to recognise that. I’d urge people to come along and share their ideas so we can come with a fitting legacy of what was a great event.” The consultation event takes place 11am - 1pm at Garrison House, Millport. The consultation will continue in Millport Library from 28 February – 14 March during regular opening times.
