While there was disappointingly no Sail and Oar festival on Cumbrae this year, it was still deemed appropriate to host the Raft Race part of the weekend, and it was a good choice judging by the hundreds of people who lined the prom to watch.

The rafts raced from Kames Bay, started off by Cumbrae Queen Olivia Hamilton, and rowed to the harbour. The sea was a bit choppy and amongst other hazards the rafts had to contend with water cannons, water balloons and flour bombs!

The winners were the Tavern Bar, with the runners up being the Millport Playgroup - an all female crew - entitled ‘Ship Ahoy’. This was a great achievement by the girls who organised the event. The Letham family’s raft ‘Castaways’ came in third spot.

Queen Olivia Hamilton presented the trophies to the winners, the Tavern Bar, and the best dressed raft ‘Ship Ahoy’.

The wooden spoon was presented to the ‘Woodstock Waaaamers’ from the Lady Margaret Hospital. The proceeds all go to the playgroup, and other children’s groups on the island.
