It was an uneventful, overcast morning when the Isle of Cumbrae was suddenly invaded by a number of classic cars, with models ranging from the early 50s to the late 70s.

As the 25 beauties pulled into the Garrison grounds, they were welcomed to the town by Jim Newton who has wanted to bring such cars to the island for several years.

“Cars have always been a passion of mine,” Mr Newton said. " To see such fantastic old cars visit our island was just brilliant.” Indeed, on the day, the people of Millport flocked to see the cars, which included a Morris Minor from 1954.

Local people marvelled at them and the response to the event was overwhelmingly positive. In the end, it was a 1964 Vauxhall Victor VX490 which caught the eye of the judges and took the prize for best car.

The owner, Harry McWilliams, is a member of Greenock Classic Car Club and bought the car six years ago.

Greenock Classic Car Club were largely responsible for the success of the event, and Mr Newton thanked Russell McPhee and the rest of the club for their attendance and support on the day.

Additionally, thanks are extended to Cumbrae Community Development Company and Garrison House for the venue and support of staff and to Stewart Cape for providing the 60s music.

It was testament to the island that the event was such as success to be built upon and Russell from Greenock Classic Cars intimated their willingness to return, highlighting the typical Millportonian welcome the club members had felt, being offered free tea, coffee and sandwiches.
