A new Foodbank project is being set up in the North Coast area, with an appeal for food collections at Morrison’s Supermarket this Saturday.

Since forming, via the help of Facebook a few weeks ago, a voluntary committee of nine has been formed, and has been offered the Citizen Advice Bureau in Boyd Street, Largs, to hold their meetings, and organise the scheme.

Local man David Baillie was the man behind setting up the project, which will be set up for the North Coast areas including Largs, Skelmorlie, Fairlie and Cumbrae.

A meeting has already been held with North Ayrshire Foodbank group, who provide foodbank facilities via the Ardrossan Church of Nazarene.

Largs Foodbank committee member Alex Nisbet said: “We have got the Citizen Advice Bureau in Largs to use as a premises, and we are now looking to start collections and handouts to people. We have been told that the area of land at the back of the C.A.B could be used as some kind of growing area for food, and that is something which we are looking into.

“We are hoping to get the whole community involved, and make it a cross-generational thing.

“While the north coast isn’t the poorest of areas, the area is spread out, and there are some poor areas throughout the district.” The foodbank will tie in with a number of different agencies, and the format of the North Ayrshire Foodbank Project will be replicated in Largs under the plans.

The Largs Foodbank Group will be based at Morrison’s Supermarket on Saturday from 10am-5pm, and are appealing for rice, pasta, and canned foods including fruit.

Another committee meeting was held on Tuesday evening, and it hoped to get volunteer drivers, food and cash donations.
