North Ayrshire Council have had to pay out thousands of pounds in compensation for a range of serious and bizarre incidents, according to a report published by the BBC.

Most councils who replied kept the details of claims made over the last 15 years very general. However, North Ayrshire’s list makes for interesting reading - not simply for the nature of the incidents and the level of compensation, but also for the informal language used to describe the cases.

On this page you will find a small list featuring a handful of the 1,246 compensation claims, both the very serious and the bizarre, along with the details North Ayrshire Council provided on each case.

The council have said they are unable to provide specific location details under data protection laws.

A spokesperson said: “We consider that releasing the location of the accident is likely to identify the individual who made the claim.

“We consider that this will breach the individual’s right to privacy under the Data Protection Act 1998, and this information is therefore exempt from release in terms of the exemption in s. 38 of FOISA.” But the North Ayrshire Council spokesperson did add: “All claims are treated on an individual basis and are thoroughly investigated by our team. The incidents highlighted vary in nature and date back to 2000.

“The council regularly review our claims data as part of our overall strategy to managing risk and are committed to embedding appropriate controls to manage the risks faced.” Here are just some of the claims: • Childs’ fingertip caught in door.
