“Hands off!” .. That’s the warning from Largs Thistle boss Sandy MacLean after rumours were circulating that Kilbirnie were interested in ace keeper Grant Weir.

Grant was one of the winners at the Thistle Player of the Year award held at J.G Sharp’s, and his outstanding displays against Ladeside last year, had apparently caught the eye from over the Haylie Brae.

However, Sandy has dismissed the speculation: “Grant has signed for Largs Thistle for next season, and there has been no interest or contact. I have spoken to Kilbirnie Ladeside about a couple of things, but Grant was never mentioned. Grant is going nowhere. He had three extremely good displays against Ladeside.” Largs have agreed terms with four new players including some familiar faces with ex-Largs striker Sean Pierce, who came on loan two seasons ago from Albion Rovers, set to join. Pearce’s successful loan spell resulted in a move to Cumnock, and subsequently Kilbirnie.

The Barrfields men have also made a move for Jamie McDonald, who is a combative midfielder, and featured in Thistle’s surprise 1-0 victory over Scottish Cup champions Hurlford United.

A name which will bring back memories for some of the older supporters is Jimmy Frizzel, a top quality Thistle player in the 1950s, who went to feature for Oldham Athletic and manage Manchester City. His namesake, Alan Frizzel, a 21 year old midfielder from Dumbarton, has also agreed terms with the Barrfields outfit.

And finally, Mark Murray is also on his way to Thistle after featuring for a number of junior clubs including Winton Rovers, Rob Roy, Kilbirnie and Cumnock, and will play in the left back position.

Sandy said: “I would hope that Sean Pierce would bring more goals to the team, not just in terms of scoring but creating them; he is a quick and exciting player. Alan Frizzell has been with Dumbarton and Morton, and is another attacking option and has good skill and quick feet, and can play upfront or wide, Mark Murray will remedy the left back position, and it will allow Creag Little to return to the centre back position.

“Jamie McDonald is a dogged and combative midfielder, and will be another important asset, as he showed in the last match against Hulford.” Largs Thistle have lined up some big friendlies including a re-match of the 2010 Scottish Cup final when Linlithgow Rose come calling at Barrfields Park on Saturday July 19th and a re-match has also been lined up against last year’s play-off opponents Ashfield in Glasgow on Wednesday 30 July. Other friendlies include a home tie against Bonnyrigg Rose on Saturday 26 July.

The awards at the Largs Thistle Player of the Year celebration at JG Sharps were as follows: top scorer with eleven goals Euan Lindsay, Players Player of the Year Grant Weir, Committee Player of the Year Eddie Walton and Supporters Player of the Year Iain Fisher, for the second year running.

Thistle committee man Pat Rall man won the 2014 Archie Dickie Award for services to the club, and Tommy Scouller received two special awards from Eddie Walton and Willie McClure on behalf of the players.

Largs have released Nicky Little, Ryan McWilliams, William Boyd and captain Eddie Walton who left the club at the end of this 2013-14 season. The club would like to thank them for their hard work with us and wish them every success in the future. Training resumes on Wednesday 25 June.
