Largs Gymnastics Club Boys are certainly hitting the heights after becoming the ‘top team in Scotland’..

Under the leadership of Head Coach Allan McKinnon, the young athletes battled to win first place at the Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Grades Series at Bells Sports Centre in Perth on Sunday 14 June. The competition was an important preparation competition for the grade series qualifier for the British finals which will take place in Perth on 19 September. The boys competing at Club Development Grades were in Level 1, Rob Russell and Kieran Walker; in Level 2, Joshua Gregory, Kai Chalmers, Ethan Yates and Robbie Young; in Level 3, Corrie Gibson, Matthew McGill and Grant Arneil; and in Level 4, Kerr Wilson and Alistair Peacock.

The boys competed on 6 apparatus: floor, vault, rings, parallel bars, high bar and pommel, as well as a personal physical preparation set. The following boys won all around medals: In Level 1, Kieran Walker (silver) and Rob Russell (bronze); in level 2, Robbie Young (gold) and Ethan Yates (silver); in level 3, Matthew McGill (gold), and in level 4, Alistair Peacock (silver).

Awards were also issued to the gymnast with the top score in each individual apparatus on the day. Top score awards went to Matthew McGill (pommel), Robbie Young (PPP), Grant Arneil (parallel bars) and Matthew McGill and Ethan Yates (vault equal). Also representing Largs at the MAG Floor and vault on the same day were Jack Lafferty, Lee O’Donnell, Andrew Sutherland, Marcel Emery and Lee Gordon. Competing in the Under 8 category and all receiving bronze certificates from Scottish Gymnastics were Jack Lafferty, Lee O’Donnell, Andrew Sutherland and Marcel Emery. Lee Gordon competed in the Under 10 category and was awarded a silver certificate from Scottish Gymnastics.

The boys competing at club development grades train 20 hours per week with Allan McKinnon at Inverclyde National Sports Training Centre.

Recreational classes for children at the Largs facility start at age 10 months, and an adult class is also available.
