Largs Thistle 0 Cumbernauld 1 Cumbernauld notched a valuable away win against a Largs side who will be smarting after missing several gilt edged chances.

Largs went into this game, sitting in second bottom place were hoping to get back to back wins after a 3-0 win at Ardeer, while Cumbernauld sitting in midtable still have sights on promotion.

There was a real zip to the start of the game with Alan Frizzel's diagonal high ball to the left of the penalty box finding James Marks whose off balance volley finished up over the bar.

But on eight minutes, the visitors grabbed a shock lead as Carroll found space near the edge of the penalty box and spotted the Largs keeper off his line to send a rising shot into the top left corner of the net.

Largs were working down both wings trying to create chances with some high balls trying to unsettle the Cumbernuald rearguard with Willie McClure smashing one volley past the right post.

Thistle continued to put pressure on the Cumbernauld defence who were giving away a number of fouls, and McClure sent a fizzing free kick to the bottom right hand corner, which had to be saved by the Cumbernauld keeper at the second attempt.

One of Thistle's best moves came from a bursting run by Scott Keogh down the left wing, and his arching cross found James Marks who headed over the bar with the goal gaping.

And then Marks was sent scurring through, and took an extra touch to take the ball away from a defender but his final shot flashed wide of the left post.

These were two gilt edged chances but Largs created another good opportunity on the verge of half-time as a corner kick came flying into the box and Creag Little managed to use his height to get a good head on the ball but couldn't direct his effort on target.

By the time half-time had arrived, it was a real mystery how Largs had not managed to get on the scoresheet given the chances presented.

Chances in the second half were at a premium as Largs looked dangerous from set-pieces but just couldn't find a way through and chances began to dry up. Thistle manager Bryan Slavin decided to try and change things, and moved Euan Lindsay and Sean Pierce on to try and shake things upfront.

But at the other end, Cumbernauld, after weathering a lot of pressure, nearly scooped a second goal as Thistle's Mark Murray came to the rescue to divert a Foley drive away from goal through his outstretched leg, and then Ross Lundy had to make a reflex save to deny Murphy.

Largs slipped to the foot of the table on goal difference after today's defeat, while Cumbernauld are now five points off a play-off place.
