Kelburn Garden Party may be well known for its great musical acts, but festival visitors will get an enhanced ‘visual and creative experience’ at the big summer music festival.

Of course, Viscount David Boyle, and sister Alice, are no strangers to great art design, having enlisted Brazilian graffiti artists to give the castle a colourful re-paint in 2007.

Karl Graham, Curatorial assistant for Edinburgh Palette, who are behind the project, explains: “David Boyle devised the annual garden party as way of inviting the public to the enjoy the Kelburn Country Estate, while also providing a platform for emerging musicians and performing artists from around the world. Extending the festival with an experimental art trail had long been an ambition of Kelburn Productions, the company that run events in the grounds throughout the year.

“Earlier this year, David was put in touch with visual artist Sophia Lindsay Burns by his sister Alice, a painter who holds studio at St Margaret’s House in Edinburgh. Sophia is herself an artist and, more recently, the Art Director of Edinburgh Palette, the charity running St Margaret’s. Her experience as an artist, curator and director enabled her to give shape and form to David’s ideas.” The Neverending Glen will bring together a series of site-specific installations and sculptures, running from the garden beside the castle to a newly-built plateau overlooking the river.

There will also be a programme of performances, workshops and guided art walks, and a makeshift bus service. Many of the artists and collectives taking part have never exhibited outside of a gallery before. It is hoped that the new project will offer an enhanced visual and creative experience, for audience and artist alike.

Works include a pop-up gallery space, a restaurant serving gourmet food in the forest, a fully-playable sculpture constructed from salvaged pianos and immersive hammocks woven from fishnets and glass droplets. The aim of each piece in The Neverending Glen is to unlock a new state of mind towards the arts, where something unexpected, engaging and surprising will happen.

The Garden Party takes place from 3-5 July.
